About Educational Notes
In 1896, the U.S. Treasury printed Silver Certificates with beautiful designs depicting educational motifs. Known as the “Educational Series,” each of these notes is a numismatic masterpiece. They’re also incredibly difficult to come by, which is why our buyer was so excited to locate these notes. We’ve managed to locate a $1 note showing allegorical forms of History instructing Youth on the front, paired on the back with a first and only in U.S. currency: the portraits of BOTH George and Martha Washington!
The Educational Series was the name for a three-bill series of Silver Certificates issued in 1896 and produced through 1898. The allegorical works of art were intended to showcase through art the impact the Industrial Revolution was having on the country as culture, the sciences, and knowledge flourished. These three designs are widely considered to be the top three in the history of American paper money. On the obverse of each bill in the Educational Legal Tender Note Set is a different allegorical interpretation from the original Silver Certificate series. The $1 bill has the image of History instructing youth, while the $2 bill features Science introducing steam and electricity to Commerce and Manufacture. The $5 bill depicts Electricity providing light to the world.
The reverse of each bill is likewise different based on the denomination. The $1 bill features its iconic combination of the Great Seal of the United States and the all-seeing eye.
The $2 bill bears John Trumbull’s 1818 painting of the signing of the Declaration of Independence.
On the $5 bill, the Lincoln Memorial is featured.
